Is Self Catering Worth The Effort Written on July 31, 2008, by Internet Garner.

There are two basic options when choosing to travel abroad: going with a group, and going alone as a self catered holiday. Each way has many benefits, but as consumers will find out, the former option is going to be less appealing as a resultt of less freedom that it entails.

Self catering, as the name would imply, is for those who aren’t afraid to travel alone or with a friend or family members. Self catering is usually only recommended by travel agents if the traveler knows the area or has visited once before. In the case of not knowing the area, the consumer might want to take a guided tour the first time, and visit later as a self catered trip.

Self catering is great for seeing attractions that everyone else on the tour may not want to. If a travel agency has a bunch of customers who would rather see the beach than go to an art museum, the consumer is usually out of luck. And when considering traveling to another country altogether usually isn’t common, one could be missing the chance of a lifetime.

If a family is bringing kids along, it’s usually a better idea to get the self catered holiday. Kids are notorious for wanting to do certain things- and only certain things. Kids love the beach, arcades, and boardwalks, and of course- great food! But when traveling on someone else’s schedule, fulfilling the entertainment of a child can be a tough action indeed.

Tour groups aren’t entirely a dictatorship. Indeed, they do allow for some free time. But when considering that they usually don’t allow alcohol or sometimes even smoking on the tour, this can conflict with the views of others who view it as a great way to have fun when done in moderation. Again, this imposes on the consumers freedom- something that feels less fun than being able to do things otherwise.

It does seem like a lot of work planning a self catered holiday, but travel agencies are knowledgeable enough to give advice for travelers to plan their own trip without frustration. Even if one hasn’t visited the area before, travel agencies can give enough information to travelers to make their stay just as much functional as it is entertaining.

In Conclusion

To learn more on making the perfect self-catered holiday, look online and visit local travel agents. Professional travel agents will also be able to provide more information for those who want to opt for self-catered holidays as opposed to group tours.
